Decorating a home can seem rather daunting at first. It’s difficult to come up with a cohesive plan to follow. In order to make your vision become a reality, there are things you need to keep in mind while designing and decorating the interior of your home. From measuring the spaces and furniture to personalizing the knobs on your cabinets, every little detail counts when it comes to home decor. To help you get a good start on the process, we’ve compiled 10 great tips to keep in mind while designing a space.

Color Scheme

After measuring the room you want to design, the first thing you want to do is pick a cohesive color scheme. It’s best to stick to no more than three colors and work from there. If you want more variety, you can use several shades of the colors you picked. Keep in mind that paints will look different on your walls than in the store. The best rule to follow with a color scheme is the 70-20-10 rule: use 70% of the main color, 20% of the secondary, and 10% of the accent color. If you’re one who likes to switch the colors of a room rather often, you can opt for neutral tones with the large furniture pieces such as sofas and then just replace the smaller items like pillows and rugs.

Samples

Make sure to get samples of the colors and textures you want for the room to see if they all work well together. Paint a large paper with the paint color you want and move around the room with it – the color will look different than it did in the store. The point of this tip is to create somewhat of a mood board to see everything together before committing to the items.

Seasonal

There are people who like different vibes in their decor in the changing seasons. For instance, some prefer a cozy and warm feel in the winter, but in the summer they like a bright and fresh design. In this case, they can simply get two sets of accessories for the room and switch them out when the seasons change. It’s best to keep in mind where they would store them when they’re not in use so the room doesn’t become cluttered.

Accessories

When it comes to decorating a room, there is a fine line between styling it and over-accessorizing it. Too many smaller items will cause the space to look messy and cluttered. Keep the accessories simple and work with the space you have, making sure to leave some negative space as well.

Mix And Match

To make the design of a room more interesting, use various patterns and textures to create more depth. Using the same solid colors will become boring. Mixing patterns and textures will make the room more diverse and complex.

Greenery

Greenery is a great way to bring any space to life. If you don’t do well with keeping plants alive, you can always opt for succulents and other low-maintenance plants.

Don’t Match

Try to avoid using matching furniture sets and matching accessories. Doing so will create a flat and uninteresting design. Using a variety of items will create a lovely tapestry in the room and make the design unique.

Odd Numbers

When placing objects in a room, you’re better off grouping them in odd numbers. Using items with various heights will add a lot to the design as well.

The Larger The Better

Accessories look fantastic in just about any room, but the only mistake that people tend to make is placing too many small objects. Doing so will make a room look cluttered. Instead, buy larger accessories that work in the design you want.

Lighting

As we’ve mentioned, when picking a color scheme, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the lighting of the room. Each color will look different in various hours of the day. In addition, each room requires different lighting, so design accordingly. You wouldn’t want dim lighting in the kitchen, just as much as you wouldn’t want bright lights in the bedroom when you want to unwind. The best option, in this case, is getting light dimmers in all the rooms.
