5. Azawakh – $9500

The Azawakh is considered a fairly new breed, only being fully recognized in 2019. It originates from West Africa where the breed was traditionally used as a hunting dog. They are related to both Middle Eastern and South Indian hounds. The breed is not so common stateside yet, but is growing in popularity. They are a great breed to have since they recover very well from injuries and rarely have hereditary issues. On a diet of good-quality food and daily exercise, your Azawakh can live between 12-15 and will certainly make a great furry pal!

4. Tibetan Mastiff – $10000

The Mastiff originates from Tibet where its breed served its purpose protecting sheep from various predators. They are a hefty pup, and can way over 150 lbs. They can really come up against dangerous animals like leopards and bears. The breed diminished slowly as owners struggled to afford the maintenance of this stunning breed. A dog that will protect your family in an instant, they are often prone to hereditary issues such as hip dysplasia and eye abnormalities.

3. Chow Chow – $11000

Originating from North China, the Chow Chow is one of the oldest and least frequent dog breeds in the world. It is super expensive to buy and even more to maintain. You will have to spend big on food, treats, veterinary care, grooming and any health issues that the Chow Chow might have. They need plenty of exercise and is a naturally stubborn breed. The life expectancy of a Chow Chow is around 8-12 years, but can be longer if well taken care of.

2. Löwchen – $12000

The Löwchen is often referred to as the ‘little lion dog’ due to its appearance. It has been popular for hundreds of years and originates from France. The special thing about this dog is that the breed has become ultra rare. In 1973 there were only 65 registered in the world, whereas today there are more in the world, but only 300 being registered worldwide. The dogs are very outgoing and love being active and playful, therefore making them a perfect dog for the family. They are a breed that needs a lot of attention however, so if you don’t have the time, this dog really isn’t for you. The breed is particularly healthy, so it won’t bankrupt you with maintenance fee, just the initial purchase fee. They also typically live to a good age, spanning an average lifespan of 13-15 years.

1. Samoyed – $14000

The Samoyed is the most expensive dog in the world! It will set you back a whopping $14000 to purchase one. The dog breed originates from Siberia and is well-known for its nurturing nature. They are sweet, friendly and eager to please their owners. They are always jolly and full of happiness. You do need to make sure they are always on a leash, however, as they often have a sense to run away and keep going for miles and miles. An intelligent, social dog, they are also attention seekers. The breed is a great family dog and will slot in perfectly to any family. The downside with this pup is that they are known to rack up very large veterinary bills due to many health issues. Treating such issues as corneal dystrophy, autoimmune conditions, and various cardiac disorders can end up costing almost $5000.

Naturally, the dogs on this list are rare and that is what drives their price up the most. We recommend adopting first and foremost as there are many dogs that need rescuing, but if you were to go for an expensive one (one from this list), make sure you are well prepared!
